Irish Angling Regulations

A guide to fishing rules, licences, and seasons in Ireland

This guide provides a general overview of angling regulations in Ireland based on Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) guidelines. Regulations change regularly — always check the latest rules before fishing.

General Freshwater Regulations

These rules apply when fishing in all freshwater lakes, rivers, and streams in Ireland:

  • The only legal method is rod and line
  • Maximum 2 rods at any time
  • No live fish as bait
  • No transfer of live roach between waters
  • Must not kill foul-hooked fish
  • No fishing for eels — return all eels

On waters designated closed or catch & release for salmon: no worms as bait, only single or double barbless hooks when fishing for any species.

Access & Permissions

Going fishing in Ireland is generally easy, with much of the fishing either free or controlled by clubs who make permits readily available.

  • Where fishing is controlled, access is normally at designated entry points indicated on your permit
  • Where fishing is free, access may be through farmland — always seek the landowner's permission
  • Landowners do not always own the fishing rights on adjoining waters

Safety

  • Wear a life jacket (legally required in boats under 7m)
  • Follow advice on warning signs and notices
  • Check weather forecast and tide tables
  • Fish with a partner or let someone know where you're going
  • Carry a fully charged mobile phone in a waterproof case
  • Wear appropriate clothing and footwear
